GENRE SCHEDULE

  • September: Contemporary
Contemporary is an extremely broad style of interpretive dance which combines elements from a variety of dance genres including, but not limited to: modern, ballet, and jazz. Each choreographer brings their own unique style and characteristics to the genre so no contemporary class is ever quite like another. This class will include a warm up, across the floor exercises, and end with a movement combination. Attire: Comfortable clothing you can move in (fitted preferred). Dancers may wear shoes or dance barefoot.
  • October: Ballet
Ballet formed in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century; danced by nobility for entertainment and celebrations. Ballet today still offers the classical and romantic ballets from the past as well as more contemporary and innovative concepts. In our beginning ballet class we introduce ballet etiquette, break down ballet fundamentals, and perform exercises at barre and in the center. In our intermediate class we continue ballet training by developing our coordination, alignment, and placement. Each class offers the opportunity to grow in flexibility, and strength while exploring gracefulness and musicality. Attire: Dancers may wear tights and a leotard or any comfortable clothing you can move in (fitted preferred). Ballet slippers are encouraged but dancers may also dance barefoot.
  • November: Tap
Tap dance is an American dance genre that has evolved over time. It emerged in the southern United States in the 1700's and was initially a fusion of British, Irish and Scottish jigs combined with West African musical and step-dance traditions. It is characterized by using the sound of metal taps to strike the floor as a form of percussion. Join us as we learn tap steps and incorporate them into a fun dance combination. Attire: Comfortable clothing you can move in with tennis shoes or tap shoes.
  • December: World
This month will feature a different world dance each week. Beginning and Intermediate level classes will be combined. Week 1: Belly Dance Week 2: Flamenco Week 3: West African Attire: Comfortable clothing you can move in for all genres. Belly Dance: Dancers will be barefoot for this class. Flamenco: A maxi skirt and character shoes. Tennis shoes or some other shoe with a sturdy heel will also work. African: Dancers will be barefoot for this class.
  • January: Jazz
Jazz dance, at its origin, developed during the mid 20th century and finds its roots in the African, South American and European movement vernaculars. Popular jazz dance combines several dance forms including ballet, modern and pop styles for a fun, upbeat dance experience. Each week will feature a different style of jazz and will include a warm up, across the floor exercises, and a choreography combo. Attire: Comfortable clothing you can move in (fitted preferred). Dancers may wear jazz shoes or dance barefoot.
  • February: Social Dance
Social dance involves a partner and is typically intended for participation rather than performance or competition. Styles include ballroom and Latin dance. Beginning and intermediate levels will be combined for this genre. Attire: Comfortable clothing you can move in. Flat or heeled shoes are welcome but please do not wear pointed heels as they may damage the floor. Dancers may also dance barefoot.
  • March: Modern
Modern dance began at the turn of the 20th century as a response to the two prominent dance forms of that time: ballet and vaudeville. During this month we will explore the pioneers of modern dance. Each week will feature a different person and will include choreography and exercises that reflect their technique and contribution to modern dance. Attire Any clothing you can move in. Dancers will be barefoot in this class.
  • April: Hip Hop
The birth of hip hop can be traced back to the Bronx in the 1970's and included four main pillars: DJing, rapping (also called MCing), breakdancing (usually called breaking or B-boying), and visual art (graffiti). Join us as we explore hip hop grooves and movement through fun dance combinations. Attire: Comfortable clothing which covers the legs (sweats or leggings) and tennis shoes.
  • May-August: Summer Session (varies week by week)
During summer, Explore Dance Company offers mixed-level dance classes that vary week by week based on the instructors. Classes will include technique, conditioning, and dance elements.

Schedule and instructors subject to change. Classes may not be held on some holidays.
