Dancing with Harry Potter

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

While we may come from different places and speak in different tongues,

our hearts beat as one.

On October 29, Explore collaborated with Treasure Valley Down Syndrome Association (TVDSA) and Elevated Dance Project to host a Harry Potter themed adaptive dance class. This free event was offered to members of the Treasure Valley community with various levels of physical and cognitive disabilities. Three sessions were held, serving dancers ages four through adult. Guests were invited to wear costumes and Explore Dance Company members arrived dressed as the Sorting Hat, Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, the Snitch, Hedwig, and, of course, Harry Potter.

It was pure magic.

We moved, we laughed, we sang, and we connected. With such a extraordinary day it's hard to pick our favorite moments. Was it the girl who arrived with her Hedwig owl only to discover she also got to dance with Hedwig? Or the little boy who was so excited that our photographer was Harry Potter that she put down her camera to dance with him? We can't choose. Each moment was unique and exceptional in itself.

Explore's missions is to build meaningful connections in the community through dance by providing fun opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and new experiences. And what a wonderful new experience it was for all those involved! Thank you to all of the volunteers who gave their day to make this event possible and to everyone who came and trusted us with your time. We are eternally grateful.

This event was just one example of the year-long partnership we've had with TVDSA. Explore Dance Company also performed at the annual Walk for Down Syndrome and 100% of the proceeds from the silent auction at our upcoming charity benefit concert, Cinematic, will go to TVDSA.
